Oliver Cromwell became head of the army of Parliament. The proceedings of Parliament turned into long debates which interfered with the prosecution of the War. There were Royalists in Parliament who made trouble and Cromwell sent them packing.

Even that was trying for Cromwell so he closed the place down entirely and governed with the cooperation of a military council. In 1649 Charles 1st had his head cut off. Unrest did not end during the 1650s. Cromwell wanted Parliment to take charge again but there were too many factions in play as well as an unpaid army hanging about. Leaders of the various groups thought they could get away cheap and not pay the soldiers. Much like to-day. Then in 1658 Comwell died and his son Richard assumed leadership. But the boy was not up to the job and was gone in a matter of months. England found itself in difficult straits, without any clear way out of the troubles.

Then a very wise man, a very unselfish man, a visionary came to the fore. General George Monck, a man who should have a much more prominent place in English history performed what can only be called magic. Monck was the one who said he wanted victory WITHOUT BLOOD and his Country meant more to him than his life. The General was Cromwell’s second in command. He was stationed in Scotland with a finely trained army of 5000 foot and 2000 horse. Later this army became know as the Coldstream Guards. Monck decided enough was enough after Richard Cromwell fled to the continent and he decided to march on London and crack a few heads. ALL OF THE PARTIES HAD TO BE BROUGHT TO THE TABLE AND SOME KIND OF AGREEMENT REACHED TO BRING PEACE BACK TO THE LAND.
